D3, D4 and D5 are turbocharged diesel engines powered by equipped with a common rail injection system and installed in Volvo models. They were first deployed in 2001. Today, these engines are used on most of the brand's models. The engines are characterized by excellent performance and reliability. They are quiet, easy to maintain and help reduce fuel consumption.

Features of D3, D4 and D5 engines
D3, D4 and D5 engines have 4 or 5 cylinders. They are made of aluminum. These engines have a single or twin turbo. In some cases, a variable geometry turbocharger is used. Depending on the version, the injection system can be fitted with electromagnetic or piezoelectric injectors. A belt is used in the valve timing mechanism. Some engines have I-Art, an in-house development by Volvo. Here, individual pressure and temperature sensors and microprocessors are used for each injector. This ensures that the engine runs smoothly and contributes to the lowest possible fuel consumption and emissions of pollutants.
